Our History

The story of Ebony Grove High School begins with the vision of one man who saw the potential for educational transformation in rural Clarendon. In 1995, Mr. Moses Mayne, a Jamaican who had spent many years in the United States of America, returned to his homeland with a dream of establishing a quality secondary institution. Connected with the Inter-America Improvement Association (I.A.I.A.), Mr. Mayne brought international perspectives and resources to bear on local educational needs in the southwestern region of Clarendon parish. When Ebony Grove High School opened its doors in September 1995, it welcomed 88 pioneering students and four dedicated teachers to its Toll Gate location. These humble beginnings reflected both the school's intimate approach to education and its ambitious goals for student achievement. The founding philosophy of 'Excellence with Godliness' established the dual commitment that would guide the institution through decades of growth and development. A significant milestone came in 2006 when the Ministry of Education began playing a vital role in the school's operations, marking official recognition of Ebony Grove's educational quality and community impact. The Ministry began placing students at the school through the Grade 9 Achievement Test, providing new opportunities for young people throughout Clarendon to access the school's distinctive educational approach. This partnership validated the vision that Mr. Mayne had established more than a decade earlier. The school's physical infrastructure expanded significantly during the summer holidays of 2007 when the Ministry of Education provided a new classroom block. This facility enhancement allowed Ebony Grove to house specialized departments including visual arts, clothing and textiles, and carpentry, demonstrating the school's commitment to comprehensive education that prepares students for diverse career paths. The expansion reflected growing confidence in the school's educational model and its ability to serve increasing numbers of students. By September 2012, continued growth led to another milestone when the school received 40 students through the Grade Six Achievement Test, though ultimately 22 of these students enrolled. This expansion represented both the challenges and opportunities of educational growth in rural Jamaica, as Ebony Grove continued to refine its mission of providing accessible, high-quality secondary education grounded in Christian values and academic excellence.
